It’s Men’s Health Week in Canada and we wanted to take some time to discuss this very important issue. Men’s Health Week started in 2014 and it’s goal is to “educate the public about what can be done to improve the state of men’s health and provide health information to men and their families.” Mental health in particular is an area of concern for men.
The Numbers
- Based on a 2012 study, men account for four out of five deaths by suicide.
- The Canadian Mental Health Association reports that “young and middle-aged men are being hospitalized for schizophrenia in increasing numbers”.
- Men also have higher rates of substance abuse compared to women (6.4% compared to 2.5%).
But Why?
Many point to the societal expectations for men to be strong, not cry or discuss their feelings as a barrier to reaching out and getting help. Statistically speaking, it has been shown that men are less likely to know how to get help and can be more afraid to ask for help. That’s why awareness events like Men’s Health Week are so important: to get the conversation started.
